Massage is one of the core services offered at Morley Chiropractic clinic. It is one of the most universally adopted treatments that is offered in the world of injury rehabilitation and posture correction. The reason for its wide spread usage – it works.
Massage is one of the most beneficial treatments you can have. It is also one of the most easily accessible, which is no small part of its popularity. All it takes from the patient is a willingness to lie down and possibly suffer some discomfort.
So why is massage so popular and beneficial for us?
Remedial massage.
Remedial massage differs from a relaxation massage due to the potential medicinal benefit of it. A relaxation massage is exactly that – it is soft and gentle, often accompanied with scented oils and music. Whereas a remedial massage is typically a bit deeper (more pressure is applied) and is often used to treat specific issues. Massage has been scientifically proven to help improve a range of issues, including:
- Nausea (typically due to chemotherapy treatment or surgery)
- Stress reduction
- Anxiety
- Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS)
- Chronic lower back pain
- Stress, pain, anxiety and sleep issues associated with chronic disease
How does it help?
Massage works by manipulating two natural responses in our bodies. These are:
The relaxation response – when we are physically manipulated in a safe and caring way our responds by lowering blood pressure, slowing your breathing and reducing the production of stress hormones. These factors combine to put us in a state of relaxation which then soothes aches and pains.
The mechanical response – this is the main response we are looking to manipulate when performing remedial massage. A deep tissue massage encourages blood and lymph circulation. This then serves to divert more oxygen and nutrients to the muscle which then in turn aids recovery. Knots and spasms are stress responses that your body does subconsciously, the physical manipulation of these can serve to relax them and turn the ‘protective response’ off – which releases the pressure on compressed nerves and lessens pain.
As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, massage has been used for thousands of years as a recovery and relaxation method. It is a very effective tool in the arsenal of the chiropractor or sports injury therapist.
