Knee Pain Dos and Don’ts

Knee pain affects most people in one way or another throughout their life, especially if they undertake sport. Knees are very complex joints and are used in nearly all movements, often having to deal with very odd and obtuse forces.

While the cause and remedy of knee pain will vary from person to person, there are a few things that can be classed as good general practice when it comes to the prevention or treatment of it. A list of these can be found below.

Don’t – rest too much. By resting too much you risk losing strength in the muscles, tendons and ligaments that support the knee, thus potentially exacerbating the issue.

Do – exercise. Converse to the above, we at Morley Chiropractic Clinic recommend carrying on with light exercise, if you are able to. This well ensure that the knee stays strong, speeding up the healing process.

Do – use RICE. Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation are vital in the treatment of minor injuries. Read our recent article about it here.

Do – look at your shoes. Old, worn-out or poorly fitted shoes can easily contribute to knee pain as they lack support, cushioning and can negatively affect your posture, all of which contribute to knee pain.

Don’t – jar your knee. Jarring can occur during high impact sports such as running and try to control external impacts such as falling over or being tackled. If your knee hurts then chances are it is in a weakened state, large impacts which you could usually handle could now easily cause serious injury.

Do – see an expert. If your knee pain continues or gets worse then it is vital that you seek professional help. The causes are too many and are usually individual to each person, therefore the treatment of it also has to be. Only a professional with training and accreditations, like the team here at Morley Chiropractors, will be able to help.
